Chapter 26

“Papa! We can see them in the distance!” Gabrielle shouted down the hallway.

“Why all the shouting, Mistress?” Mr. DuBois asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

She was always surprised at what a heavy sleeper the butler was. Surely, he had to have heard the shouting earlier. “Mr. DuBois, the villagers are coming for Papa and I.”

He shook his head. “It is as I feared. I’ve heard stories from other households. Where is Lord Guillemot?”

“Do you already see them?” Lord Guillemot asked, as he and Aimée emerged from the study.

“Only the light from their torches, Papa.”

“Then it’s true? Aimée, we don’t have a moment to spare.”

“Yes, Sire.”

Her father pulled her into a fierce hug, almost knocking the wind out of her. “I could not live if anything were to happen to you. This is why Aimée will accompany you and Timothée to London. I have written the note. She has gone to pull some garments that will fit you, and you will travel in the guise of a servant, so as not to draw attention.”

She knew better than to ask about Alexandre.

“Now, hurry, find Aimée, change, and then gather all your jewelry. I regret that it has come to this, but you may need it to survive. There is no time to waste. I must inform Timothée. DuBois, wake the gardener and make sure the rifles are ready.”

“What about you, Papa? Why aren’t you going with me?”

“I must stay to throw them off your trail. Also, this will give Alexandre a chance to prove his worth. He can help us hold off the villagers long enough for you to escape.”

“No, Papa. You must both come with us.”

“There’s no time for discussion, Gabrielle. Go!”
